#1 – Get Recommendations from Friends and Family

We would really recommend finding 3-4 well recommended moving companies before you move on to step 2. Of course, you may not be able to get recommendations of 3-4 movers from your friends and family. The last thing you want is to find the company that only has good reviews because they had employees, friends, or family write them.

Once you have your list of 3-4 companies, it is time to get estimates. You do not want phone estimates! There is n way that a good moving company can estimate the time that it will take, the amount of trucks needed, the amount of manpower necessary, etc. without actually seeing your belongings. Insist on an in-home estimate. If the company is unwilling, cross them off of your list. The phone estimate is the favorite tactic of the moving scam artist – they will quote you a low price, show up and look at your stuff, and make up a reason that they have to charge you MUCH more than your estimate. And of course, since it is moving day and you are under the gun, you either pay or have to scramble to find another way to get your stuff moved. In-Home, in writing estimates are the way to go!
#3 – Don’t Decide on Price Alone
Price is important. You don’t want to pay more for the same service. However, all moving service is not the same. The quality of the packing, the care that the movers take, and their cleanliness in your old and new home are just a few of the things that set movers apart. If you are moving valuables, it makes sense to choose the company that you get a good feeling from, and who you feel will stand behind their work – even if they cost a little bit more.
